Our Values

Though our customers are at the heart of everything we do, we will always strive to be a business that also delights our staff. This is because we believe that a job is far more important than a payslip - it’s often a sense of purpose. We are proud to be an inclusive employer that offers equal opportunities to all, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, social background, religion, disability or sexuality.

Every day we do our utmost to ensure our employees are happy, healthy and safe at work. Regular risk assessments are carried out to ensure that health and safety legislations are abided by and that a safe working environment is maintained. Our Head Office and Distribution Centre workforce benefit from a good work/life balance through the availability of flexible working hours. As a family business, we also know that birthdays are a day for celebration… which is exactly why every employee receives an additional day of annual leave to celebrate their birthday with their own family!

Personal development and opportunities for growth are also key to our company ethos, and we recognise the importance in helping our employees accomplish their individual goals. We appreciate that the needs and objectives of our employees are constantly evolving, which is why we allow everyone to voice their opinions and ideas through regular engagement surveys, listening groups and appraisals.

On top of all of this, our employees are also entitled to various discount schemes and benefits operated through Sodexo, including low-cost cinema tickets and cashback on the weekly food shop. We also understand that life doesn’t stop outside of work and is often challenging, which is why we offer our employees access to professional helpline services to support their emotional and mental wellbeing.

At Alan Ward, we invest in training for employees and work hard to ensure that each employee has the right tools to do the job properly. Our Head Office and Distribution Centre staff attend training and refresher courses on computer software programmes to help develop their functional skills and enhance their approach to specific tasks, so that manual errors are avoided.

Our Sales team are constantly learning about the design and practicality of our products to help customers find items that suit their personal needs and tastes. As a consequence, our customers are rarely disappointed by the product help and selection advice receive… as demonstrated by our 5 star ‘Excellent’ rating on Trustpilot! You can read our Trustpilot reviews from our customers here.

We are also dedicated to ensuring that all of our products are compliant with regulations and have been sourced responsibly before they enter any customer home, which is why our warehouse team carry out pre-delivery product safety and quality inspections.

Our employees aim to go above and beyond with everything they do. Our 'Excellent' rating on Trustpilot demonstrates our impressive level of customer satisfaction, and the brand development and success over the past five decades has not gone unnoticed either. In August 2017, we were pleased to be awarded 2nd place in the prestigious ‘Associated Independent Stores (AIS) Member of the Year’ competition (multiple store category). The national award was a recognition from suppliers of the reputable manner in which Alan Ward conduct their retail operations.

Every Alan Ward store has been designed to inspire, with impressive room sets and exciting displays. But what makes us really different? In a word, it’s choice. We know that a piece of furniture is as individual as the person buying it - which is exactly why our Merchandising staff travel the UK and beyond in search of quality products that suit every taste.

Building relationships in the local community has been a priority since 1970, and Alan Ward has helped and shown support for many local causes. This year, we launched our Charity of the Year programme which will enable us to engage and work closely with a charity that has been selected by a panel of employees. This year we will be raising money for Hope House. For more information, please visit: www.alanwardfurniture.co.uk/charity-of-the-year

We continue to donate carpet remnants and offcuts to Shropshire Cat Rescue, a local charity who care for and re-home unwanted kittens and cats. These small carpet samples are much appreciated by the animals!

We are constantly seeking new ways to carry out good environmental practices in all sectors of the business.

Our drivers carry out pollution control practices by carefully planning delivery routes and monitoring how efficiently the company vehicles are driven. Our Buyers are always looking to partner with innovative and ethically-responsible suppliers who can offer high-quality products with a low environmental impact. Our sales team visit supplier factories and attend training sessions to learn more about how materials in products are ethically sourced. Our Head Office staff are passionate about ongoing investment in digital platforms to reduce paper wastage

Our collection and recycling service was enhanced in 2018 when we formed a partnership with The Rural Charity. Each week, we donate second-hand furniture to their charity shops located in Shrewsbury, Oswestry, Church Stretton and Wem. These items are then sold on to the public and the proceeds from sales are used to support the local agricultural and rural community, with the aim of making a difference to people’s lives across the Shropshire county. Since the partnership began, we have donated over 200 items of furniture, which in turn has significantly reduced the amount of used furniture sent to landfill.

In 2019, we became a member of Carpet Recycling UK - an organisation who work towards creating greater opportunities to divert carpet waste from landfill and recover raw materials and we are also aiming to recycle 100% of the upholstery, bed bases, mattresses, carpet and underlay we collect by the end of 2020.
